What is Lens Heater retainer？

When shooting Starscape photography, a belt-shaped or linear lens heater wrapped around the front lens may be used to prevent night dew and condensation inside the lens.
The step provided at the front of the lens is called a ‘heater retainer’, and it ensures that a lens heater does not protrude over the front element of the lens which otherwise would cause vignetting.
